It all begins with an idea
Well…it actually began while having a flirty conversation with a boy I met on the first and only Bollywood party night I have been to in London. We traded Bollywood puns over text and I was secretly thrilled to find a boy as nerdy about the movies as I was and who would actually get some of my filmy Bollywood references (I can also recite the entire Mean Girls movie and use many ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ phrases in my daily life too if anyone is interested).
Long story short, the flirty text banter fizzled out eventually, but what didn’t go flat was my enthusiasm for the witty Bollywood-isms I had come up with (see what I did there, guys?).
I started imagining the puns I had thought of with cute accompanying graphics and it wasn’t too much of a stretch to imagine these as t-shirts. I mean, who wouldn’t want a t-shirt with ‘Hum aapke hai corn’ and a cute sweetcorn on it, right?
Thus, ‘So Bollywood’ was born.
Although the idea started with the t-shirts I designed, I wanted to take it a step further and create a platform that celebrated all of the unique and amazing South Asian-inspired products I was seeing across my instagram feed in one easily accessible space. The COVID pandemic has been terrible in many ways, but the increase in support and appreciation for small businesses has been amazing throughout. Sustainability is also important to me, so the idea of being selective in your purchasing choices and buying from small independent brands has always appealed to me.
I am starting small, but I have so many ideas I want to share with you! I hope that this corner of the internet will one day be a boutique browsing destination in its own right, bringing you a carefully curated collection of high quality fashion, lifestyle, homeware and beauty products to delight and inspire you.
